We always thought that it was too difficult to teach a practical skill not in-person so had always refused as we thought that there were too many obstacles to overcome. During the various lockdowns we were forced to give some serious thought to overcoming those obstacles.

We re-wrote the course notes and reset them for displaying over the internet, developed some innovative ways of teaching the necessary level of contact, and shot over 40 training videos. The course finally launched to a global audience at the end of 2020.

They were the senior a principal practical tutors at the McTimoney college of chiropractic. They had been asked to develop a post-graduate training course for the chiropractors. As no mention of the importance of gravity had been in their training and, in fact the training they were delivering. They thought that this needed to be explored further and might make a post-graduate training course.

The book was written by LaMar Rosquist. Sue and Allyn finally tracked him down and in 1998 went to America to train with him.

When LaMar learned of our history as chiropractic tutors he asked us to do his tutor training course and teach the technique on his behalf in Europe. We used the technique exclusively in one of our clinics for 6 months to assess how effective it would be. They were so enamoured with the results they were getting that they agreed to be train others and started teaching the technique in 1998.

In 1927 John Hurley married fellow chiropractor Helen Sanders. She was fascinated by his years of research but was appalled by his lack of filing and order. She set about the mammoth task of sorting through all his work and putting it into some kind of order which made sense.

By 1929 they had developed techniques for assessing the Primary Alignment and restoring it if necessary. Together with their understanding of anatomy and physiology, chiropractic, engineering, and laws of leverage, they used techniques developed by the fledgling science of Naprapathy, a forerunner of what we would now call myofascial release.

Back in 1914 Dr. John Hurley was asked a pivotal question. This question was to have implications for the way people approached health and wellness for the next 100 years.

John Hurley was a newly qualified chiropractor and was asked a question by Dr. Willard Carver, his tutor.

At that time chiropractors were looking for the “major subluxation”. Back then they believed that once this key misalignment happened, all the other misalignments were subsequent compensations for that first one. Willard Carver asked John Hurley what he thought was this major.

John Hurley had been a structural engineer earlier in his life and he thought that it might not be a misalignment but rather a deranged relationship between gravity and the ground reaction force. If these two forces didn’t balance each other in a static object, the object would collapse. Perhaps if these two forces didn’t balance each other in a dynamic structure, the structure would be forced to compensate to avoid collapse?

Over the next 15 years of experimentation, measurement and calculation he discovered two specific anatomical points which, if they were in a correct relationship to each other, allowed the constant pull of gravity to be perfectly balanced by the ground reaction force. This allowed the person to be upright with ease and poise and grace. We now call this the Primary Alignment.

If the Primary Alignment is lost then gravity is not balanced by the ground reaction force and the person then has to compensate to hold itself up against gravty.
